Their names, stories, and contributions will be remembered and admired for generations. While some passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones, others were met with a more untimely and tragic demise. Here are the stories behind the last known photos of some of the world’s most well-known personalities. 



James Dean

On September 30, 1955, James Dean stopped to fill up his Porsche Super Speedster hours before he was scheduled to compete in automobile race in Southern California. The photo above was captured at the gas station before Dean and his crew hit the road. Tragically, James Dean never showed up for the race. He was killed in a freak accident on the way to the race.





Brittany Murphy

In the early morning hours of December 20, 2009, the Los Angels Fire Department responded to an emergency call from Murphy’s residence. They found the late actress unresponsive on her bathroom floor. She was later pronounced dead upon arrival to the hospital. The frail actress was photographed (above) during a public event several days prior to her death. The photos from that event are the last known photos of Murphy.



Steve Irwin

The photo above was captured on September 4, 2006. Steve Irwin was filming on location at Batt Reef in Queensland, Australia for the documentary series “Ocean’s Deadliest”. Prior to the photo, Irwin dove into the water and began snorkeling through chest-deep water. He was tragically killed by a stingray in a freak accident.





Marilyn Monroe

Shortly before her untimely death, Marilyn Monroe was featured in a photo shoot with photographer George Barris. The photos were not released until years after her death, and they remain some of the most naturally beautiful and memorable photos of Monroe’s career. The actress, singer, and entertainer died on August 5, 1962, from an apparent overdose.



Jimi Hendrix

The guitar legend was on holiday in London with close friend Monika Dannermann, with whom he had been staying during his trip. Monika allegedly captured the photo above of Hendrix the afternoon of September 17 while he was outside having tea in her garden. The next morning on September 18, 1970, Monika found Hendrix in bed unresponsive and unconscious. He was pronounced dead later that day.
