Biggest Celebrity Feuds and Falling Outs In Hollywood
Andrew Parker - July 24, 2019

Hollywood is a small industry full of people with huge egos, so it’s no surprise that celebrities sometimes have conflicts with one another. Whether it’s real or just the media’s interest to pit celebrities against each other for stories and headlines, the bad blood between these stars may never end. From Kanye West vs. Wiz Khalifa to Paris Hilton vs. Nicole Richie, take a look at the most heated celebrity feuds and find out where they stand today.

Katy Perry vs. Taylor Swift

The reason: Backup dancers

When Taylor Swift released her mega-hit Bad Blood and confirmed it was about a fellow female singer, who is her “straight-up enemy”, many fans wondered who the mystery singer was. The question was answered when Katy Perry tweeted the day after the interview was published: “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing”. The feud was reportedly about backup dancers who left Swift’s tour for Perry’s. However, as of May 2018, it appears as if the feud is over. Katy Perry sent Swift a literal olive branch congratulating the beginning of her Reputation Stadium Tour.

Justin Bieber vs. Orlando Bloom

The reason: Teasing with the exes

Justin Bieber and Orlando Bloom’s rivalry began way back in 2012. That year, Bieber met Bloom’s then-wife, Miranda Kerr, and was reportedly very flirty with her. It continued when Bloom was later photographed very close with Selena Gomez, Bieber’s ex-girlfriend. The feud hit its climax in 2014 when the two met in Ibiza, and things got physical. The actor tried to hit the Canadian singer, reportedly after Bieber said he had been intimate with Kerr when she was still with Bloom. The day after the incident, Bieber uploaded to Instagram a photo of Bloom crying and a photo of Kerr in a bikini, the latter was eventually deleted.

Joan Rivers vs. Gwyneth Paltrow

The reason: Criticism on Fashion Police

When asked which star gave her a hard time about her jokes on the Fashion Police, Joan Rivers said: “The worst criticism was, ugh, Gwyneth Paltrow. She came and yelled at us but she stood up. She can’t sit down ‘cause she’s got a stick up her rear end”. Paltrow didn’t remain quiet and when asked about her beauty routine in 2013 by Harper’s Bazaar, she pledged to avoid Botox saying: ”I won’t do Botox again, because I looked crazy. I looked like Joan Rivers”.

Current Status: Will never be over

Madonna vs. Lady Gaga

The reason: Song royalties

The feud between Lady Gaga and Madonna started back in 2011. Immediately after the release of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, critics noticed similarities to Madonna’s Express Yourself. Madonna was displeased with the Lady Gaga’s hit, calling the song “reductive”. It seems the two have settled their dispute, as Madonna posted a picture of the two sharing a hug after Gaga’s win at the Oscars.

Solange vs. Jay Z

The reason: Jay-Z’s cheating scandal

In May 2014, shocking security footage, featuring Beyonce, Solange, and Jay-z, was leaked. The video showed Beyoncé’s sister, Solange, yelling, hitting and kicking her brother-in-law, Jay Z, in an elevator after the Met Gala. Ten days after the incident, the trio released a joint statement that read: “They [Jay and Solange] have both apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family”.

Nicki Minaj vs. Miley Cyrus

The reason: Cyrus’ interview

When Miley Cyrus hosted the 2015 VMAs, she was focused on having everything run smoothly. But, unfortunately for Cyrus, Nicki Minaj had very different plans. Before the VMAs, Miley Cyrus interviewed for The New York Times and called out Minaj for her “not so nice” comments about Taylor Swift getting nominated for Video of the Year. As an act of revenge, and to everyone’s surprise, Nicki Minaj confronted Cyrus on live television. As of late, however, it seems the two have buried the hatchet when Miley Cyrus posted on her Instagram a photo of her with Minaj, to which the latter responded with heart emojis. That truce might not last that long, as in a recent performance Cyrus sang her new song Catittude, which features the lyrics: “I love you Nicki, but I listen to Cardi.” Let’s see how this plays out!

Ariana Grande vs. Piers Morgan

The reason: Morgan accusing Grande of using nudity to sell albums

This feud started after British journalist Piers Morgan, criticized a promotional art of girl group, Little Mix, for their single Strip. The image shows all four members posing covered only in slurs, what Piers saw as “using nudity to sell their album.” The group and Morgan exchanged jabs before Ariana Grande’s mother, Joan Grande, came to Little Mix’s defense. Morgan clapped back, tweeting that like the band, Grande uses nudity to sell albums. That’s when Ariana came in the picture, tweeting: ‘I use my talent AND my sexuality all the time because I choose to. Women can be sexual AND talented. naked and dignified. it’s OUR choice.” There is no knowing what is going to happen next in this feud.

Mariah Carey vs. Jennifer Lopez

The reason: A stolen song

On June 5, 1993, Mariah Carey married music executive, Tommy Mottola. The marriage ended badly, with Mariah Carey suffering from Mottola’s controlling nature. For her 2001 album, Glitter, Carey intended to release a song titled Loverboy containing a sample from a song called Firecracker. As an act of revenge, Mottola stole the sample for his new prodigy, Jennifer Lopez, and featured the new addition in the hit I’m Real. Peace between the two, unfortunately, seems far fetched at this point, as Carey “doesn’t know her”.

Katherine Heigl vs. Shonda Rhimes

The reason: Heigl shading Grey‘s writers

Katherine Heigl acted in Shonda Rhimes’ hit show Grey’s Anatomy for six seasons. Everything seemed to run smoothly at the beginning, with Heigl even winning an Emmy Award in 2007. Suddenly, in 2008, Heigl made a big surprising statement, saying: “I did not feel I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention.” Two years later Rhimes killed Heigl’s character off the show. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Rhimes shaded the actress, saying: “On some level, it stung and on some level I was not surprised. When people show you who they are, believe them.” It doesn’t seem the two will resolve their issues.

Rachel McAdams vs. Ryan Gosling

The reason: Gosling wanted McAdams fired

They say there’s a thin line between love and hate, and this example proves it perfectly. Director of The Notebook, Nick Cassavetes, revealed that while on set, Ryan Gosling asked him to find someone else to play Rachel McAdams’ role, his love interest. According to him, Gosling demanded: “Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me? I can’t. I can’t do it with her.” In an unexpected twist, the two wounded up dating for three years.

Katy Perry vs. Lady Gaga

The reason: Exchanging jabs for years

Lady Gaga and Katy Perry have been throwing shade at each other for years. For example, Gaga once commented on Perry’s use of green hair and a mechanical horse, tweeting: “It looks like green hair and mechanical horses are the thing now.” In addition, after Gaga said in a concert she would “die for her fans”, Perry noted during a Rolling Stone interview: “I’m not, like, a crazy ‘I’m gonna die for my fans’ type… I’m very grateful for the fans’ support, but I’m not thirsty or desperate.” In 2015 Gaga also infamously called Perry “mean” after footage of her private text messages leaked. After the latter Gaga tweeted: “These are old texts. We’ve matured, gotten over the past, love each other & share deep respect. Katy is my friend and is truly a kind soul.” To which Katy replied with a “Love you.”

Lorde vs. Selena Gomez

The reason: Lorde shading Gomez’s song

In 2013 singer Lorde commented on Selena Gomez’s song, Come & Get It, accusing it of being “anti-feminist”, and sending a bad message. Gomez responded to the allegation, saying: “That’s not feminism. [Lorde is] not supporting other women.” The two have buried the hatchet, probably thanks to their mutual friend, Taylor Swift, as both Lorde and Gomez are a part of her very famous squad.

Lady Gaga vs. Adam Levine

The reason: Levine shaded Gaga and her song

Lady Gaga’s song, Applause, was a huge hit. In the song, Gaga referenced famous works of art like Sandro Botticelli’s 1486 painting, The Birth of Venus, in her lyrics. Maroon 5 frontman, Adam Levine, wasn’t feeling it, tweeting: “Ugh..recycling old art for a younger generation doesn’t make you an artist. It makes you an art teacher.” Gaga responded by tweeting: “uh oh guys the art police is here.” Levine continued the Twitter feud, posting: “While we’re at it we should call the grammar police,” referencing Gaga’s use of “is” instead of “are”. We don’t think these two are going to make amends any time soon.

George Clooney vs. Russell Crowe

The reason: Crowe insulting Clooney in an interview

Back in December 2013, George Clooney surprised everyone when he revealed he has beef with fellow actor Russell Crowe. In an interview with Esquire Clooney said Crowe needed to apologize for “insulting” him. Clooney went on to say: “He picked a fight with me. He started it for no reason at all. He put out this thing saying, George Clooney, Harrison Ford, and Robert De Niro are sellouts.” It was revealed Crowe tried to send an olive branch, but Clooney wasn’t having it. Clooney said: “I think he said, ‘I was all misquoted,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah. Whatever.”

Zendaya vs. Giuliana Rancic

The reason: Rancic’s controversial comment about Zendaya’s hair

It’s the feud that ended Fashion Police. During an episode that covered the 2015 Oscars red carpet, co-host Giuliana Rancic noted that Zendaya’s dreadlocks must have smelled like “patchouli oil and marijuana”. Zendaya replied to the offensive comment with a long Instagram post, calling Rancic remarks “outrageously offensive.” Rancic responded with both an on-air and a written apology. After the incident, Kelly Osbourne quit the show and so did Kathy Griffin a few weeks later.

Angelina Jolie vs. Chelsea Handler

The reason: Handler was team Jen

Chelsea Handler is a longtime friend of Jennifer Aniston, ex-wife of Brad Pitt, who reportedly cheated on her with Angelina Jolie. Handler took, as expected, Aniston’s side, throwing shade at Jolie for years. Handler called Jolie a “lunatic”, soon after she and Pitt announced their separation. Handler went on to joke about Pitt’s “emancipation” while attending a charity event honoring celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who represented Jolie in the split. We’re not sure where Jolie stands, but Handler said she’s “upset that I was so upset with Angelina Jolie” wishing the actress good luck.

Lena Headey vs. Jerome Flynn

The reason: ugly break-up

Game of Thrones co-stars, Lena Heady and Jerome Flynn, aren’t even on speaking terms. As it turns out, Heady and Flynn dated briefly in 2002. Their relationship reportedly ended so badly that the two refuse to be in the same room together. Fans of the show investigated the matter and discovered that in all eight seasons of the show, the two only had one scene together once, and didn’t exchange a word.

Mariah Carey vs. Eminem

The reason: Carey denied Eminem’s claim that he was intimate with her

The feud officially began in 2003, after Mariah Carey parodied Eminem on tour, showcasing Eminem puppets. The singer also has a song titled Clown that references the rapper. The background story is that Eminem claimed he had a fling Carey, which she denied. Carey released another diss song titled Obsessed, which featured the singer dressed as a male stalker dressed in Eminem’s trademark hooded sweatshirt. Eminem fired back with a song of his own, The Warning. In a 2013 interview with Andy Cohen, Carey was asked to say three nice things about Eminem. Carey responded by saying: “They come in a package that you can carry wherever you go. People love them around the world, and they’re tasty.” Don’t expect a collaboration any time soon.
