We all know and love Kate Winslet as Rose in The Titanic. It’s nearly impossible to imagine someone else playing alongside Leonard DiCaprio in the beloved film. But apparently Claire Danes said she was offered the role of Rose in James Cameron’s film but said she “just couldn’t do it.”
The Homeland actress revealed why she turned down the role that went to Kate Winslet during her interview on Armchair Expert with Dax Shephard. Shepard asked if she’d been offered the part of Rose and she said, “I think I did. I’m not entirely clear on that. There was strong interest.”
Danes had starred as Juliet in the 1996 film Rome + Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo.
“I had just made this romantic epic with Leo in Mexico City, which is where they were going to shoot Titanic,” Danes said. “And I just didn’t have it in me.”
The actress said she has “zero regret” in turning down the role, adding, “I was really clear about it. I wasn’t conflicted. It was going to propel me to something I knew I didn’t have the resources to cope with. I knew I had to do a lot of foundation building,” Danes said.
