Looking Back

by Edgar A. Guest

I might have been rich if I'd wanted the gold
instead of the friendships I've made.
I might have had fame if I'd sought for renown
in the hours when I purposely played.
Now I'm standing to-day on the far edge of life,
and I'm just looking backward to see
What I've done with the years and the days that were mine,
and all that has happened to me.

I haven't built much of a fortune to leave
to those who shall carry my name,
And nothing I've done shall entitle me now
to a place on the tablets of fame.
But I've loved the great sky and its spaces of blue;
I've lived with the birds and the trees;
I've turned from the splendor of silver and gold
to share in such pleasures as these.

I've given my time to the children who came;
together we've romped and we've played,
And I wouldn't exchange the glad hours spent
with them for the money that I might have made.
I chose to be known and be loved by the few,
and was deaf to the plaudits of men;
And I'd make the same choice should the chance
come to me to live my life over again.

I've lived with my friends and I've shared in their joys,
known sorrow with all of its tears;
I have harvested much from my acres of life,
though some say I've squandered my years.
For much that is fine has been mine to enjoy,
and I think I have lived to my best,
And I have no regret, as I'm nearing the end,
for the gold that I might have possessed.

Ever since HBO television series Game of Thrones first aired on April 17, 2011, the world has been highly anticipating who will sit on the Iron Throne. The eighth and final season is being released on April 14, 2019. Even the most devoted fans probably need a recap of all that has happened on the show before then. From behind-the-scenes fun to fan facts, take a look at everything Game of Thrones related.

Season 8 consists of only six episodes. However, there have been reports that each episode will be feature-length and much longer. Each episode had a reported $15 million budget, so each episode is going to be “monumental” and epic.

Cersei Lannister is, by most people’s standards, the shows main antagonist of the series. This has lead to a lot of speculation that she will die in the upcoming and final season. In an interview with Time magazine, actress Lena Headey, admitted she is surprised her character has survived as long as she has. “I was really in shock [when I found out I lived in season 7]. I think obviously, now, there’s got to be some body count at the end of [season] eight.”

Producers decided to shoot multiple versions of the season finale to avoid leaks. HBO’s president of programming said in 2017, “I know in ‘Game of Thrones,’ the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so nobody really knows what happens.” Even the actors themselves won’t know the true finale until it airs.

The cast members all had strong reactions to the six scripts from the final season. Kit Harington, the actor who plays Jon Snow, told Entertainment Weekly that he waited until the cast met for a table read in October 2017 to read the scripts. “What’s the point of reading it to myself in my own head when I can listen to people do it and find out with my friends?” Harington said he cried twice during the reading. Other cast members were too anxious to wait for the other actors and read the script as soon as it arrived in their email. Sophie Turner (character: Sansa Stark), Emilia Clarke (character: Daenerys Targaryen), and Peter Dinklage (character: Tyrion Lannister) all read the script immediately.

Now that you’re all caught up and even more hyped for the final season, be sure to tune in for episode number one on April 21, 2019.
