Happiness Is Fun

By Pauline Oliver

Happy is as happy does
When all is said and done
Truly being happy
Starts with having fun

Set those happiness endorphins free
To flood your stressed out brain
With lots of happy thoughts
To relax and ease the strain
Eat chocolate
And laugh-a-lot

Chew chilis hot and red
Wear bright colours instead

Keep a dog or a cat
Try yoga on a mat

Feel sunshine warm your being
Seek beauty for the seeing

Classical music wins by miles
Exchanging lots of smiles

That's how to raise your spirit
Lift your body and your mind
This daily dose of happiness
Is a pleasure - you will find.

Things that happen in our culture and time usually affect the type of content the entertainment business will produce. Movies and shows we watch are usually reflective of the time we live in. Due to this, there are a handful of programs and films that seem offensive according to today’s standards and make you wonder – how were these even allowed to run? Take a look at some of the most famous TV shows and movies that would never pass today.

How I Met Your Mother

This beloved sitcom ran for nine seasons between 2005 to 2014. However, seeing it again in the current climate, there are some sketchy things about one character, Barney Stinson. While Stinson is a breakout character, there is no doubt some of his jokes would never be approved today. From using women without any regard to their feelings with various manipulations to filming women without their consent, the show would have probably never made it to episode two today.

Tom and Jerry

Tom and Jerry might seem like an innocent kids’ cartoon, yet, by taking a look back to its original run in the ‘40s, the show looks way different. According to The Daily Beast, some of the tropes on the show could be deemed offensive and inappropriate today. A clear example is Mammy Two Shoes, a heavyset African-American maid whose face is not seen in all but one episode. In 2014, Amazon included a racism disclaimer for the show, reading: “Tom and Jerry shorts may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.”

Gigli

This 2003 commercial and critical flop starring Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck would never be approved today. A big reason for this is Ben Affleck’s character, Larry Gigli, who tried to “turn” Jennifer Lopez’s character, Ricki’s, sexual orientation, despite her repeatedly telling him she is not interested. Another reason this movie would have never gone beyond a script is Justin Bartha’s portrayal of a mentally handicapped kid, and all the inappropriate jokes made about it.

Married… With Children

Married… With Children was a huge success from the late ‘80s to the late ‘90s, and ran for 11 seasons. However, there is no way the show would ever run in our current climate. The show stars Ed O’Neill as Al Bundy, a crude, rude, and sexist shoe salesman. In addition, the very stereotypical portrayals of his kids and the vulgar jokes made about almost every disadvantaged group makes this show a complete no go today.

Wedding Crashers

This 2005 comedy film starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson was a critical and commercial success. However, now, 14 years later, it’s doubtful the movie would have even been produced. The plot of the movie revolves around two men deceiving women in order to get in bed with them. It comes as no surprise that this premise would probably not fly today.

Revenge of the Nerds

While the story of a group of underdogs fighting back would still resonate today, the execution of 1984’s Revenge of The Nerds would never be produced today for a few reasons. Starting with the fact that Lamar is only a nerd because of his sexual orientation. Other nerds are nerds because they’re either children or because of their ethnicity. But, that is nothing compared to the scene where Lewis, the main nerd, tricks Betty into an intimate act without her knowledge of his real identity or her consent. The movie also shows the nerds setting up cameras in a sorority house. For all this and more, this movie would have never been given a green light today.
