Following in the footsteps of other best artists, Hailee Steinfeld is putting all of herself into her music, and her latest single is proving that. Reportedly, her new song “Wrong Direction” has a very emotional story behind it On January 8 the singer dropped the video for the single and fans immediately analyzed it and concluded its about her ex-boyfriend, Niall Horan. Considering the song title and lyrics and the name of Horan’s former boyband One Direction, it isn’t hard to make the connection. Let’s dig deeper, shall we?
Steinfeld reportedly started dating Horan back in February of 2018 and called it quits that December. Neither of them have ever talked about their relationship, but fans suspect that she’s finally opening up about it.
The song dropped on Januar 1st. It tells the story of a heartbreaking break-up that really hurt Steinfeld. Lyrics like “Lookin’ back, I probably should have known / But I just wanted to believe that you were out sleepin’ alone” made some fans think that Steinfeld was cheated on. And the first verse points to what could have been an unhealthy relationship from the start.
But the last line of the chorus, “It’s so gut-wrenchin’, fallin’ in the wrong direction,” are the most impactful and telling. Steinfeld has not commented on who the song is about, but she did send a hopeful message to fans on Instagram. “I know we’ve all been through hard times, just remember you’re not alone,” she wrote. “I’m so thankful we can grow from these experiences together.”
