Celebrity couples come and go, and yet, some splits manage to stay the talk of the town for years and years. Although celebrities opt to keep their breakup details on the down-low, we all wish to get an inside look. These iconic celebrity splits were (and still are) heavily covered by the media, and here’s why:
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher
When Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher announced their divorce in 2011, many assumed it was a result of their 16 year age gap. However, there is more to the story. Back in 2010, multiple allegations of infidelity on Kutcher’s side surfaced. In an interview with Andy Cohen, actor Scott Eastwood confirmed that at least one allegation was true, revealing: “He did sleep with one of my ex-girlfriends – but she was my current girlfriend at the time. I think it was the catalyst that broke him and Demi up.”
Cher and Sonny Bono
Sonny and Cher were the most iconic couple of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Finding success in both TV and music, it seemed like this couple was unstoppable. In 1974, Cher filed for divorce, revealing intimate details of the relationship not known to many. In a 1999 interview, Cher discussed the relationship, revealing Sonny’s very controlling nature: “I went to him and said… You can’t tell me what to do anymore. I’m 27 years old. You can just not tell me what to do… but he wouldn’t give me my freedom.” In the same interview, Cher also confirmed that at one point Sonny was living with another woman in their house, while they were still married. The couple’s divorce proceedings were ugly and heavily covered, with Cher accusing Sonny of withholding her fair share of earnings and him taking her to court for custody of their daughter.
Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller
Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller’s short-lived relationship fascinates many to this day. The two began an affair while Miller was still married. Not long after getting a divorce, he married Monroe. During their time together, Monroe reportedly looked at Miller’s diary, in which he wrote he was “disappointed” in her and “embarrassed by her in front of friends”. In 1957, a year after their wedding, Monroe was already drinking heavily and dependent on pills. Stuck in a loveless relationship, Monroe began an affair with co-star, Yves Montand. After five years together, the couple divorced.
Mia Farrow and Woody Allen
In 1992, after a 13-year-long relationship, Mia Farrow and Woody Allen broke up. That same year, Farrow found intimate pictures of her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, taken by Allen in his home. Previn and Allen’s affair began a year prior, in 1991. Both Allen and Farrow contracted lawyers following the discovery of the photos. Surprisingly, Allen and Previn got married in 1997, and have two adopted children.
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise
A month after calling off her engagement with Chris Klien, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise made their first appearance as a couple. Soon after, Cruise appeared in one of pop culture most memorable interviews, jumping on Oprah’s couch. In 2012, Holmes filed for divorce, to the surprise of the world and Cruise, who reportedly “didn’t see it coming.” As you may know, Cruise is a member of the Church of Scientology, and so was Holmes while the two were together. With all the secrecy surrounding the Church of Scientology, it’s no surprise this relationship was such an interest to the public and the media alike.
