It Couldn't Be Done

By Edgar Guest

Somebody said that it couldn't be done But he with a chuckle replied That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried. So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin On his face. If he worried he hid it. He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it!

Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that; At least no one ever has done it;" But he took off his coat and he took off his hat And the first thing we knew he'd begun it. With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin, Without any doubting or quiddit, He started to sing as he tackled the thing That couldn't be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to prophesy failure, There are thousands to point out to you one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing That "cannot be done," and you'll do it.

Celebrity couples come and go, and yet, some splits manage to stay the talk of the town for years and years. Although celebrities opt to keep their breakup details on the down-low, we all wish to get an inside look. These iconic celebrity splits were (and still are) heavily covered by the media, and here’s why:

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber

Despite their young age, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber formed one of the most iconic and talked-about couples in Hollywood. The two dated on and off between 2010 to 2018. Reportedly, Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, contributed to the couples split, as based on Bieber and Gomez’s history, Teefey wasn’t convinced Bieber had in fact changed. In 2016, more was revealed on what caused their initial breakup and Teefey’s distrust in Bieber. In an Instagram comment, Bieber accused Gomez of dating him for attention, to which she replied: “Funny how the ones that cheated multiple times, are pointing the finger at the ones that were forgiving and supportive.”

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher

When Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher announced their divorce in 2011, many assumed it was a result of their 16 year age gap. However, there is more to the story. Back in 2010, multiple allegations of infidelity on Kutcher’s side surfaced. In an interview with Andy Cohen, actor Scott Eastwood confirmed that at least one allegation was true, revealing: “He did sleep with one of my ex-girlfriends – but she was my current girlfriend at the time. I think it was the catalyst that broke him and Demi up.”

Princess Diana and Prince Charles

This royal romance was filled with scandals. First, the very public affairs – Diana with her bodyguard, Barry Mannakee, and Charles with his now-wife, Camila Parker-Bowles. The latter is remembered for their infamous, scandalous, voice message. A year before the couple divorced, Diana went on record expressing doubts about Charles being fit to rule as King. The two separated in 1992, after receiving a letter from the queen, an “order” to formally divorce.

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake sent the world into a frenzy when they announced their separation in 2002. As rumor has it, Spears cheated on Timberlake with choreographer Wade Robson and was caught when Timberlake found a note in her room. The speculations seemed to be verified when Timberlake released the music video to his hit, Cry Me a River, which featured Timberlake revenge-cheating on a Britney Spears look-alike. In a different song, right after the breakup, Timberlake sang: “I thought our love was so strong / I guess I was dead wrong / But to look at it positively, hey girl / At least you gave me another song about a horrible woman.”

Cher and Sonny Bono

Sonny and Cher were the most iconic couple of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Finding success in both TV and music, it seemed like this couple was unstoppable. In 1974, Cher filed for divorce, revealing intimate details of the relationship not known to many. In a 1999 interview, Cher discussed the relationship, revealing Sonny’s very controlling nature: “I went to him and said… You can’t tell me what to do anymore. I’m 27 years old. You can just not tell me what to do… but he wouldn’t give me my freedom.” In the same interview, Cher also confirmed that at one point Sonny was living with another woman in their house, while they were still married. The couple’s divorce proceedings were ugly and heavily covered, with Cher accusing Sonny of withholding her fair share of earnings and him taking her to court for custody of their daughter.

Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller

Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller’s short-lived relationship fascinates many to this day. The two began an affair while Miller was still married. Not long after getting a divorce, he married Monroe. During their time together, Monroe reportedly looked at Miller’s diary, in which he wrote he was “disappointed” in her and “embarrassed by her in front of friends”. In 1957, a year after their wedding, Monroe was already drinking heavily and dependent on pills. Stuck in a loveless relationship, Monroe began an affair with co-star, Yves Montand. After five years together, the couple divorced.

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling may seem like the most obvious couple, but as it turns out they’re not. Truth is, when McAdams and Gosling first met on the set of The Notebook, they hated each other. Nick Cassavetes, the director of the movie, revealed Gosling told him he “can’t do it” with McAdams. The two eventually dated for three years before calling it quits. The popularity of The Notebook and the wish of many to see them as a real-life couple keeps this relationship the talk of the town for years.

Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt

By 2005, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt were the seemingly unstoppable power couple of Hollywood. Then, news broke out of the reported, infamous, affair of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The couple divorced after five years of marriage. There were, and still are, many speculations and rumors on what actually caused the couple to go their separate ways. This is one of the most talked-about and publicized relationships in Hollywood, making headlines even a decade after its conclusion.

Mia Farrow and Woody Allen

In 1992, after a 13-year-long relationship, Mia Farrow and Woody Allen broke up. That same year, Farrow found intimate pictures of her adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, taken by Allen in his home. Previn and Allen’s affair began a year prior, in 1991. Both Allen and Farrow contracted lawyers following the discovery of the photos. Surprisingly, Allen and Previn got married in 1997, and have two adopted children.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise

A month after calling off her engagement with Chris Klien, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise made their first appearance as a couple. Soon after, Cruise appeared in one of pop culture most memorable interviews, jumping on Oprah’s couch. In 2012, Holmes filed for divorce, to the surprise of the world and Cruise, who reportedly “didn’t see it coming.” As you may know, Cruise is a member of the Church of Scientology, and so was Holmes while the two were together. With all the secrecy surrounding the Church of Scientology, it’s no surprise this relationship was such an interest to the public and the media alike.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt shocked everyone when they announced that they were separating in September 2016. Almost three years later, Pitt and Jolie are still making headlines all over the world. The two were rumored to call it quits following an affair Pitt had with his Allied co-star, Marion Cotillard, in addition to their different views on how to raise their children. Many speculate that an incident between Pitt and their son, Maddox, on a private plane prompted Jolie to file for divorce.
