You’re not alone if registering at a gym is on your New Year’s resolutions list. The month of January is known for attracting new members trying to stick to their New Year’s resolutions. Millions of Americans have gym memberships, but their schedules keep them from going. It’s all too easy to skip the gym or not use all of your paid services. If you’re new to the gym, you can improve your odds of success — and get a lot more bang for your buck — by following a few basic guidelines to help you choose the proper spot, set goals, and amp up your workout.

The first step to making the most out of your gym registration is to set goals. You should have some precise plans before you go in the door. Which ones will you be able to accomplish with the help of this gym? Do you want to drop a few pounds, tone up your physique, or prepare for a marathon? Before joining a gym membership, know what you want to achieve. The most common method to squander money on a gym subscription is to ignore it and skip exercises. Instead, make a fitness regimen that you can reasonably follow and fit into your schedule.

Another way is to get a personal trainer. Personal training can be costly, so consider twice before committing to a long-term program. On the other hand, if you haven’t been to the gym in a long time, paying for a few sessions can be an excellent investment. A personal trainer can design a customized training plan for you, show exercises on and off the equipment, ensure good form, and provide lots of incentive for when you do go it alone. Next is to avoid being self-conscious. Will you see some toned bodies? Yes. But, just like you, you’ll see regular Joes and Janes who are just starting out on their fitness adventure. So, consider purchasing a couple gym outfits that make you feel fantastic, but keep in mind that most other gym-goers aren’t paying attention to you. Instead, they’re focused on their own workout and self-conscious about their shortcomings.
