Looking Back

by Edgar A. Guest

I might have been rich if I'd wanted the gold
instead of the friendships I've made.
I might have had fame if I'd sought for renown
in the hours when I purposely played.
Now I'm standing to-day on the far edge of life,
and I'm just looking backward to see
What I've done with the years and the days that were mine,
and all that has happened to me.

I haven't built much of a fortune to leave
to those who shall carry my name,
And nothing I've done shall entitle me now
to a place on the tablets of fame.
But I've loved the great sky and its spaces of blue;
I've lived with the birds and the trees;
I've turned from the splendor of silver and gold
to share in such pleasures as these.

I've given my time to the children who came;
together we've romped and we've played,
And I wouldn't exchange the glad hours spent
with them for the money that I might have made.
I chose to be known and be loved by the few,
and was deaf to the plaudits of men;
And I'd make the same choice should the chance
come to me to live my life over again.

I've lived with my friends and I've shared in their joys,
known sorrow with all of its tears;
I have harvested much from my acres of life,
though some say I've squandered my years.
For much that is fine has been mine to enjoy,
and I think I have lived to my best,
And I have no regret, as I'm nearing the end,
for the gold that I might have possessed.

Joaquin Phoenix Admiring His GF
Joaquin Phoenix didn’t walk the 77th Golden Globes red carpet with fiancee Rooney Mara. Why you might ask? Because he wanted to sweetly admire her from afar instead. Our favorite famous faces become almost unrecognizable when we see what they looked like before Hollywood got a hold of them. These baby-faced future stars were only dreaming of fame when these photos were captured. Here are some of the best photos taken of celebrities when they were young and before they were famous.

Angelina Jolie, 1990

A 15-year-old Angelina Jolie shows off her baby face, which looks strikingly similar to Mila Kunis. Her career quickly picked up in the early 90s, and she has maintained her status as an A-List actress and one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents.

The French model and actress rose to fame throughout the 1960s and 1970s. She is pictured above as a young and aspiring entertainer. She would go on to have a successful career in music, as well. One of her most famous quotes: “A photograph can be an instant of life captured for eternity that will never cease looking back at you.”

Photographer Daniel Sorine happened to be shooting in Central Park in New York City one afternoon. Years later when he was looking back through photographs, he realized he captured then up-and-coming comedian and actor Robin Williams as a mime.

Pamela Anderson lets her natural beauty shine through in this incredible early modeling photo. This was before her transition to Hollywood (and before her many surgical enhancement procedures). She went on to model for Playboy and star in the beach drama Baywatch.

Tyson and his family grew up in the Bronx neighborhood of New York, and he enjoyed a love of science and discovery from a very young age. He is regarded as one of the brightest minds and influential thinkers of all time.
