Punk Rock Beauty Is Making A Comeback
Claire Miles - February 22, 2020

New York Fashion Week saw a new beauty theme weaved into numerous designer shows: punk rock. Right after last year’s Euphoria makeup moment where we saw lots of rhinestones and sparkly eyeshadow, fashion has seen a blast from the past trend. From heart-stamped face paint at Christian Siriano to chipped nail polish at Khaite, here are the trends that look as good as 1975.

Face Paint

Christian Siriano’s lead makeup artist used Harley Quinn for inspiration for the Fall/Winter 2020 show. “Inspired by shiny flecks in the fashion collection and the Birds of Prey star, I recreated the comic-book character’s signature dark eyeliner and the heart tattoo on her cheek,” Parsons says. “I added an orchid-pink lip for a finished look that was equal parts sexy and strong.”

Hairstylist Laurent Philippon worked the slick hairstyle look at the Christian Cowan’s runway show. “I used Sumogel to pull strands out around the face, then spritzed Sumo Liquid Wax+ Finishing Spray for buildable separation, light hold, and natural sheen,” Philippon says.

Nail pro Jin Soon Choi and Khaite designer Catherine Holstein presented the most unexpected manicure: glossy black chipped nails. Choi describes the look as “effortlessly cool” said she used a brush dipped in nail polish remover to chip away the paint.
