STRANGE INVENTIONS THROUGHOUT HISTORY That Are As Hilarious As They Are Weird

Changes

By Greta Zwaan

I sought for joy in peace, and rest to ease my weary mind,
Stressed out by such a heavy load, rest I just had to find.
My endurance could hold no more, my limits had been met,
I needed time to stand aside, sweet time to just forget.

But where to find the road to peace, an obscure trait to me;
My hectic lifestyle can't comprehend a way to set time free.
I've always rushed from A to B with no side glace allowed,
I had my life so well controlled; in truth, I felt quite proud.

No one could tell me what to do, I was a self-made man;
My schedules were controlled by me, I had a thorough plan.
'Twas good when all things went my way and no one interfered;
I had no one to answer to, my way was always cleared.

But years of this brought me no joy, though fortunes I'd amassed;
It seemed that all the things I owned would oh, so soon be past.
I had no friends that knew my plight, I kept myself at bay,
They all had troubles of their own; besides, what could they say?

They envied me with all my wealth, they never saw my pain,
I had life altogether, what more was there to gain?
But loneliness is terrible and emptiness is sad,
There seems no purpose for each day, no reason to be glad.

So now I wait; why? I don't know, but life for me must change.
There must be more than fortunes, a way to rearrange.
There has to be a purpose, and someone surely knows,
Why life is complicated, and days so full of woes.

Perhaps you have the answer, perhaps you know the route,
Perhaps you've traveled here before; if so, please help me out.
If need be, I'll be patient, I'll even take advice;
I'll gladly make the changes, no matter what the price.

I don't need independence, I've had my round of that;
I long for understanding, to know just where I'm at.
Someday I hope to thank you because you saw my need,
Perhaps with greater meaning, with purpose, not with greed.

I don't know how I got here, what lies ahead of me,
I'm grateful there'll be changes, I'm grateful to be free.
Women's Fashion Trends
There’s a pretty simple reason why retail companies market primarily to females: Women love beautiful clothes, and men love to look at beautiful women. But throughout the history of the fashion industry, there have been more than a few choices that raised eyebrows and made people think, “who on earth is coming up with these […]

Technology throughout the years has made some exceptional advances when it comes ingenuity and complexity. We all love to get a taste of the latest devices that our money can buy, however, unfortunately, they don’t always last. With every successful device, there are usually many other versions that didn’t work. Looking back through history, some of these failed inventions are seriously strange…

The Hangover Cure

This incredibly strange, confusing, and rather comical looking contraption on this woman’s face, is, believe it or not, a specially designed ice cube mask that was created with the goal of curing hangovers.  It appears as though at the time, in 1947,  people simply didn’t know any better, and that hangovers were not quite as common as today.

Looking back at it today, we can really only laugh at it, but at the time, it was surely considered to be highly innovative, especially when there really weren’t very many options to deal with the after-effects of drinking. It is important to also keep in mind that excessive drinking was a much less popular activity. As it became a more common past time and a less taboo subject, research also kept up with the times and has since found many more effective ways to deal with a hangover.

The Baby Protector

Pictured here above is a woman pushing around her newborn baby in a stroller.  Everything sounds more or less normal, right? Well, other than the fact that she’s wearing a gas mask on her face, of course. Oh, and also the fact that the baby stroller is somehow different than the standard strollers that we know and see on the streets today.

This baby stroller was created back in 1938 in order to protect young children from gas attacks. At the time, it seemed like the greatest idea to hit the planet. Today,  other than the fact that would we surely have other methods of protection, we probably wouldn’t be casually taking our child out in a stroller in a nuclear war.

One Wheel Ride

In today’s day in age, in the twentieth century, it has become more than common to drive up to four wheel drive cars, and at the very least, two-wheel cars, in order to handle some tough roads and weather conditions, and of course to just ensure general safety for ourselves and for our passengers riding with us.

But in 1931, things were a whole lot different. This single wheel motorcycle pictured above was the most thrilling new thing to come out of the market and was most likely not seen as any safety hazard. Engineering has clearly come a very long way since then, as well as our knowledge about what should be legal.

Snow Cones

Generally, we hear the word ‘Snow Cones’ we automatically associate it with going to the amusement park as children, and think of eating that delicious, frozen, pink and blue, sugar loaded treat (and of course begging our parents for it too).  What else could a snow cone possibly be, right? Wrong.

In 1939, the term had a very different connotation, and children couldn’t even come up with the snow cones we know and love today in their wildest dreams. These women, pictured above are wearing cones on their faces. These were in fact specially designed in order to protect them from blizzards and snow storms. Thankfully, over time, we learned more effective methods to protect ourselves and keep ourselves warm from difficult weather conditions.

Efficiency At Its Finest

Whoa. Talk about efficiency. We think that today was as efficient as ever and that we do everything in the fastest, most simple way, as we try to combine all of our many tasks and do everything ”on the way” as we commonly like to say. Well, this family has seriously proved us all wrong in the most hilarious way possible.

This 1939 bicycle fits an entire family of four, as well as a sewing machine.  Why not fix up your children’s ripped or oversized clothing while taking them to school and dropping your husband off at work? Sounds like a real fun-filled family outing. Other than the fact that we’re not entirely sure how many people made it back home in one piece.
