Scatter Seeds Of Kindness

If you have a friend worth loving
Love him. Yes, and let him know
That you love him, ere life's evening
Tinge his brow with sunset glow
Why should good words ne'er be said
Of a friend till he is dead?

If you hear a song that thrills you
Sung by any child of song
Praise it. Do not let the singer
Wait deserved praises long
Why should one who thrills your heart
Lack the joy you may impart?

If you hear a prayer that moves you
By its humble, pleading tone
Join it. Do not let the seeker
Bow before his God alone
Why should not thy brother share
The strength of ‘two or three' in prayer?

If your work is made more easy
By a friendly, helping hand
Say so. Speak out brave and truly
Ere the darkness veil the land
Should a brother workman dear
Falter for a word of cheer?

Scatter thus your seeds of kindness
All enriching as you go
Leave them. Trust the Harvest-Giver
He will make each seed to grow
So, until the happy end
Your life shall never lack a friend

One of the most anticipated festivals around the world is Oktoberfest, the 16-day German Volksfest (beer festival). Held in the Bavaria region,  it’s a celebration of two things Germans hold near and dear: their beer and their food. What most people don’t know is that Oktoberfest has been around since the early 1900s.  And while some traditions have changed with time, some things remain exactly the same, as evidenced by these photos.

Flashback to 1976, when 17-year old Dana Beyer is crowned Miss Oktoberfest. Upon her coronation, she is swiftly lifted into the air by the man next to her, who appears to have a ribbon of his own. Judging by her expression,  she’s totally ready to be put down now.

Sticky Situation

“You guys would tell me if there was something in my dirndl, right?” The combination of these low cut barmaid dresses and several pints of beer makes for some very awkward moments. It’s not clear whether she’s looking for a lost contact lens, or perhaps just wants to loosen her corset.  In any case, no use crying over spilled beer.

I’m Fine, Guys

7.5 million liters of beer are consumed at Oktoberfest, and it looks like this guy drank half of it. Seriously though, where are his friends? It looks like someone had a little too much fun and needs a quick break from all the festivities. Unfortunately for him, that means being doubled over and passed out on a bar.  At least his outfit is still on point. And apparently, he makes a nice arm-rest.

Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop

God bless Bavaria. These girls clearly came to party and nothing’s gonna stand in their way (not even a low tolerance). The dirndl is actually a traditional feminine dress that’s commonly worn in Austria and Bavaria. It’s possible that the girl in green might have ordered her’s a few sizes too small, but it’s highly unlikely that anyone’s complaining.

Ah, the 70s. These ladies in their classic barmaid dresses were clearly the belles of the ball. Also, who can say no to a nice, big suckling pig on a platter? Today, the most common foods eaten at Oktoberfest are roast chicken and pork, Wurstl (sausages) and of course, pretzels. While both the fashion and delicacies have evolved since this photo was taken, it’s nice to look back and see what inspired the festival as we know it today.

The Grass Isn’t Always Greener

Yikes. This guy’s day is off to a pretty rough start, but he definitely has a bunch of crazy stories from the night before to make up for it. But between being passed out in broad daylight and his traditional feather hat, this picture perfectly sums up Oktoberfest. We definitely have some questions, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be able to give us any answers.
