90s kids have a reason to get hyped for the new live-action Pokémon movie, Detective Pikachu. The trailer came out on February 26 and really gave everyone a lot to look forward to. The clip gave fans a lot of things to think about before the movie.

So here is what we know so far. Ryan Reynolds is starring as the voice of Pickahu. The story is about a boy named Time Goodman (Justice Smith), who is looking for his missing father. Seemingly connected to a larger case of disappearances, Detective Pikachu and Tim set out to find Tim’s dad and get to the bottom of the mystery. In a clip from the trailer, there are two missing persons sings for Squirtle and Pancham. The film follows the premise of the story from the Nintendo 3DS game with the same title, Detective Pikachu.

The film comes to theaters on May 10, so there is plenty of time to catch all of the hidden Pokémon in the trailers. Fans will be excited to see the return of Mewtew, who is expected to be the villain in the movie.

A little bit of Pokémon history in case you didn’t know: The Pokémon franchise was founded in 1995 and is the highest grossing media franchise of all time. That includes movies, television shows, manga, trading cards, and video games. There have been a couple of animated Pokémon films, but this is the first live-action. Many people commented that they are a little surprised that the main characters like Ash, Misty, Brock, Pikachu, and Team Rocket are not starring in the film.

The Pokémon Company commented on Ash not being the protagonist in the film. Director Robert Letterman said, “The Pokémon Company, they’ve already made many, many movies of Ash, and they came to Legendary with this idea of using a new character. So when I came on board, I was pitched this character of Detective Pikachu, and I fell in love with the story behind it.”

Fans are also falling in love with the story and are so ready to catch the film!
