The Real Meaning of the “Old Town Road” Lyrics

Have You Earned Your Tomorrow

By Edgar Guest

Is anybody happier because you passed his way? Does anyone remember that you spoke to him today? This day is almost over, and its toiling time is through; Is there anyone to utter now a kindly word of you?

Did you give a cheerful greeting to the friend who came along? Or a churlish sort of "Howdy" and then vanish in the throng? Were you selfish pure and simple as you rushed along the way, Or is someone mighty grateful for a deed you did today?

Can you say tonight, in parting with the day that's slipping fast, That you helped a single brother of the many that you passed? Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said; Does a man whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead?

Did you waste the day, or lose it, was it well or sorely spent? Did you leave a trail of kindness or a scar of discontent? As you close your eyes in slumber do you think that God would say, You have earned one more tomorrow by the work you did today?

Out of all the Cyrus clan, Billy Ray was the last of them we thought we wanted new music from. And a year ago, most people didn’t even know who Lil Nas X was. That all changed when Billy Ray Cyrus and Lil Nas X collaborated on the hit song “Old Town Road.” The hip-hop/country crossover shocked and shook the music industry, totally colliding two words that don’t necessarily seem to mesh well. But the result was amazing and the songs popularity just won’t stop.

Lil Nas X actually called the genre “country trap.” “Old Town Road” has blown up and is one of the hottest tracks going into the 2020 Grammys. So, given its popularity since 2019, we have the answers to some pressing questions.

The lyrics, “Yeah, I’m gonna take my horse to the old town road / I’m gonna ride ’til I can’t no more” is apparently very deep. Lil Nas explained to Genius that the song represents the path to success, wealth, fortune, and all that good stuff he’s experiencing right now. Lil Nas X believes his opportunities are limitless, hence why he’s going to ride ’til he can’t no more. “I got the horses in the back” represents how Lil Nas X is traveling on his journey to success, and his acknowledgement of the talent he has to give to the world. The lyrics “Ridin’ on a horse, ha / You can whip your Porsche” are meant to show he knows he has the talent to make it in hip-hop.

“Can’t nobody tell me nothin’ / You can’t tell me nothin’” These lyrics are a message to anyone who doubts the 20-year-old singer. He won’t let anything bring him down on his way to the top.
