According to Michelle Blaisure, a certified trichologist for Bosley Professional Strength, including healthy fats in your diet is necessary for healthy, thick hair. She says, “While genetics determines hair texture and curl, our diet plays a role in how genes can get expressed. Be sure to get plenty of good-quality protein and good fats like olive oil and omega-3s.” She recommends salmon, avocados, nuts, vegetables, and fruits to get all the key nutrients needed for growing stronger hair.” You also want to ensure you are using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair because there are all kinds of different hair types out there. Jenny Balding, a senior stylist at Cutler salon says that those with thin hair should use volume building shampoo, while those with coarse hair should add products to help tame frizz.
Additionally, contrary to popular belief, washing your hair too much causes more harm than good. Over-washing is a big no no, and according to Lucy Flora, a stylist at Frederic Fekkai in New York City’s SoHo, “There is nothing better for shine than the hair’s natural oils. You can help distribute the natural oils by gently brushing your hair regularly (more on that below). Just don’t go more than a few days before a shampoo; you still need to rinse away product buildup to maintain a healthy scalp.” The scalp is often overlooked, but hair growth starts at your scalp, and you can activate blood flow by massaging. Plus, you’re also giving yourself a nice head massage. Also, although it might not be the funniest thing to hear, you’ll want to lay off the hot tools. And until you get your desired results, you can always create the illusion of thicker hair by adding a volumizing mousse and texturizing spray. We’re manifesting the long locks!
