Smart

By Shel Silverstein

My dad gave me one dollar bill
'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
'Cause two is more than one!

And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes -- I guess he didn't know
That three is more than two!

Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just 'cause he can't see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!

And then I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!

And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head --
Too proud of me to speak!

Remember that song you loved as a kid? The one that got you through the hard times, that made the good times even better, and that you can still play to this day and have all those feelings suddenly rush back as if no time has passed? Well, there’s a lot you didn’t know about how that song came to be. Here are the facts.

The original lyrics to “Yesterday” were about sexy eggs.

Paul McCartney woke up one morning humming the tune to “Yesterday”. Before writing the infamous lyrics we all know today, he sang the song with placeholder words: “Scrambled eggs … oh, my baby, how I love your legs …”

Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” was inspired by Scarlett Johansson.

More specifically, the song was inspired by Johansson’s lips. Katy revealed the details to NME magazine saying, “I was with my boyfriend at the time, and I said to him, ‘I’m not going to lie: If Scarlett Johansson walked into the room and wanted to make out with me, I would make out with her.”

Michael Jackson almost died while writing Billie Jean.

Michael Jackson wrote “Billie Jean” during a ride home from his recording studio one day. He was so caught up in the music that he failed to notice his car was on fire. He was alerted of the fire by a passing motorcyclist.

Britney’s tiny clothes came with a tiny budget.

The pop star is best known for her 90’s hit “…Baby One More Time”. But, that infamous outfit, along with all the clothes in the video, were purchased at a local K-Mart.

Unlike the Titanic, Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” succeeded on the first try.

The song was written and recorded specifically for the movie, and Dion initially didn’t even want to record it. Producers got her to record a demo version, and the first take was so good that it became the final version (which almost *never* happens).

That snake gave Britney a rash.

During the dress rehearsal of the iconic VMA “I’m A Slave 4 U” performance, Britney Spears broke out in a terrible rash, likely caused from the snake she had wrapped around her. She had to be covered in body make up for the final performance.

Britney’s “I’m A Slave 4 U” was originally written for Janet Jackson.

The song was written by Pharrell Williams before his “Happy” days and intended to be recorded by Jackson on her 7th solo album. While the song didn’t fit well with Janet Jackson’s sound on the album, she handed the song over to Spears, who instantly knew it would be a hit for her.

Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction inspired the creation of YouTube.

In 2004, the world was just getting hooked on TiVo, one of the first television applications that could record and rewind live TV. During the Super Bowl of that same year, an infamous wardrobe malfunction occurred during the half time show starring Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake. With so many people trying to rewind their live recordings to see what had just happened, the future creators of YouTube thought up their next big idea.

“Bootylicious” has been added to the Oxford Dictionary.

The infectious song was released by Destiny’s Child in 2001. Editors at the Oxford English Dictionary officially recognized the term in 2004. Bootylicious is an adjective defined as “(of a woman) sexually attractive.”

Madonna has a newly discovered species named after her.

And it’s not exactly a compliment. In 2006 scientists discovered a new species of tarigrade (water bear) and named it Echinuscus madonnae in her honor.
