Why is Social Media Detox Necessary?

Smart

By Shel Silverstein

My dad gave me one dollar bill
'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
'Cause two is more than one!

And then I took the quarters
And traded them to Lou
For three dimes -- I guess he didn't know
That three is more than two!

Just then, along came old blind Bates
And just 'cause he can't see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!

And then I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
Down at the seed-feed store,
And the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!

And then I went and showed my dad,
And he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head --
Too proud of me to speak!

We all know how at times social media gets a little too much for us. The constant updates may get triggering at times. However, you have to understand that social media is not a necessary and always a choice. You can always mute or unfollow people who you think suck out the good energy out of you. This is an era of social media however, if it takes time we all get into this guilt of spending too much time on a certain site. It is bothersome as you could have spent much of your time on other things such as some self-care, writing your journal or reading your comfort book. Moreover, multiple studies have concluded that social media affects mental health adversely. It has been concluded that young adults who spend the majority of their time on social media are known to face anxiety and depression much more than teenagers who do not use this amount of social media. Adults who are very less social media oriented are known to faceless depression as compared to others who spend a huge amount of their time checking their social media.

It has also been noticed that social media is known to harm relationships. It is so much pressure before you post something on the internet. If a photo of your friend is unflattering, there is a high chance that he/she might not like it. Moreover, our physical health is adversely affected. Using social media for long hours does lead to migraines, headaches and weak eyesight. Researchers have found out that the urge to check social media may hinder your night sleep as well. It is also known to reduce productivity.
